Dracula has risen from the grave

Or at least, Scarlett has blogged again. Yes, folks -- I am still alive. Did you miss me?

Not doing too well on the 'blogging more regularly' front, am I? Well, here's a brief catch-up:

The book I recently sold, Dark-Adapted Eyes, will be released on the 30th of April next year by Total-e-Bound. The contract's signed, but I haven't yet received my countersigned copy so maybe I'm jumping the gun a little in saying that, but it should be okay. Fingers crossed!

Healthwise, things haven't been too great. I'm knocking on a bit now, so it's obvious that these things will happen. ;) Okay, okay, I 'fess up. I put my back out. At the age of thirty-five! I'm only just getting back to normal, and by 'normal' I mean 'able to walk upright again'. Add a migraine to the mix and I haven't had a wonderful time of it lately...

Currently working on editing Temporary Position, which comes out on Hallowe'en. (Sounds so much better than saying merely the 31st of October, no?)

I've been tinkering with the idea of retiring from erotic romance at the end of the year, but that's probably a whole other blogisode of its own. I'm finding myself drawn to another genre and resisting certain restrictions which are typical of the erotic romance genre. I'm not a great fan of happy-ever-after endings; I much prefer happy-for-now, but it seems readers of erom prefer much more...shall we say...defined...endings, whereas my natural inclination is towards the ambiguous. Why? Real life isn't pat, contrived, or perfect. Okay, romance readers want the fantasy. I get that. But when your suspension of disbelief is put under great strain, well...

Maybe it's just me. But it's a matter I'll give more thought, and will definitely blog about at a later date.

Now what? I have a book to finish tinkering with and send back to my editor, so I'll get on with that. Meanwhile, let Jonathan entertain you.
Jonathan + Rhys + Meyers = OM NOM NOM.

6 stains:

  1. congrats on signing on the dotted line xxx

And I know what you mean about the happy for now endings...romance does allow for it, but it does seem as if the HEA is preferred. I'm sure you'll figure out if/when it's time to step into a new genre. Or one your books will do it for you LOL
    ((hugs)) feel better soon

  2. I also like the Happy For Now endings, because they feel more like life. In some ways, I feel like reading too many HEA romances when I was younger mucked with my expectations for how romance should work in the real world. Not that the escapism isn't lovely, it's just sometimes a bit depressing :)

  3. How disappointing. I clicked on this expecting it to be a post about the excellent Christopher Lee film.

    Still, glad you're not dead.

  4. JoAnne -- I feel like for a number of months now, the endings I want to write are increasingly at odds with what the majority of romance readers want. That's okay, each to their own and all that, but it shows me that I'm not, at heart, a romance writer. And there are an awful lot of erom books with tacked-on endings that seem rushed. And, sad to say, I'm concerned about being associated with a genre that has a high percentage of contrived happy endings. If they're deserved, great, but if the characters appear to act out of character for the sake of a HEA, the book falls apart for me.

Elizabeth -- Yes! I agree about the HFN endings. One can't see the future. If you're happy NOW, that's all we can expect, and should be grateful for that. I believe, anyway.

Luke -- Where do you think I nicked the blog title from? Gotta love The Lee. He's the shiznit.

  5. Well done on another dotted line.

Good luck with the back; did mine a couple of years ago and wasn't jolly about it.

  6. In Risen you take on the role of a nameless (male) hero castaway on the fictitious volcanic tropical island of Faranga. The island is originally only inhabited by humans and animals. However, recent storms and volcanic eruptions cause ancient temple ruins to rise from the ground unearthing long hidden areas such as catacombs and dungeons. From these "Risen" ruins strange and fantastic creatures begin to spill out across the island.
